What Our Programs Offer

The Camp Excel Bergen County summer camp program is designed to meet your child’s academic, social and emotional needs in a camp-like setting.

Classroom
Children work on academics and behavior management with a Certified Special Education Teacher. Each child’s academic program is developed to meet individualized goals based on information provided by the child’s last teacher.
Social Skills Group
These daily groups assist children in improving interpersonal skills and are facilitated by Master’s Level Therapists. Therapeutic activities are fun and based on themes such as Conversational Skills, Problem Solving, Cooperation, Self-Esteem Building and Anger Management. In addition to these groups, staff members continuously give encouragement and guidance in using these social skills throughout the day.
Sports Skills
The children work with Certified Physical Education Teachers, and are given coaching and supervised practice in sports and game skills. Small groups and a 1:3 staff to child ratio, allow for individual attention and optimal success. The goal of sports skills training at Camp Excel is to teach cooperation, enhance self-esteem and self-efficacy. Good effort is encouraged and competition is not emphasized.
Arts & Crafts
Arts and crafts give children an opportunity to express their creativity. Art projects often have a therapeutic component such as projects that build self-esteem, express feelings or encourage cooperation.
Special Activities
Specials activities can include Cooking, Laser Tag, Talent Show, and more.
Swimming
Monday through Thursday, children swim at Pascack Valley Swim Club, a private pool with Certified Life Guards on duty. Staff to child ratio is 1:3 for swimming to provide for maximum supervision. Safety is the highest priority at Camp Excel. Our summer program is certified by the New Jersey Department of Health and follows all safety practices required for that certification.
Field Trips
Weekly field trips can include bowling, Rye Playland, Keansburg Waterpark, Funplex, Liberty Science Center, Medieval time and more. Children are very well supervised during these trips, and are assigned to counselors with a 1:3 staff to child ratio.
Behavior Modification System
Camp Excel utilizes an extensive behavioral point system to encourage and reinforce progress toward goals. Children earn points that they can spend on fun prizes in the Camp Store!
Awards
Friday is Award Day at Camp Excel. Awards are given to several campers from each group during a special assembly. The award, as well as the recognition from staff and other campers in a full round of applause, does absolute wonders for boosting self-esteem!
Transportation
Transportation is provided from central pick-up points. The fee for transportation is included in the tuition. We make every effort to accommodate our families’ transportation needs. Children are transported in 15 passenger vans, 7 passenger vans or automobiles. All drivers have a Commercial Driver’s License and undergo fingerprinting and background checks. Families
At Camp Excel, family involvement is an essential part of our program. Daily Reports, Weekly Social Skills Progress Reports, End of Program Academic Summaries and End of Program Social Skills Progress Reports are sent home to inform families of the child’s progress. A Parent Group is offered one evening each week. We provide complimentary childcare during that time for campers and their siblings in an effort to make attending more convenient. The sessions are not mandatory, but strongly recommended. Parent Group topics could include:

  • Behavior Modification
  • Giving Effective Commands
  • Communication
  • Social Skills
  • Building Self-Esteem
  • Dealing with Siblings
  • Using Time-Out
  • Limit Setting and Appropriate Consequences
  • Medication Issues
  • How to Deal with Bullying

These groups offer helpful information and also provide a supportive environment for families. Many parents take this opportunity to network with other parents and continue to keep in touch throughout the year. We also provide an evening for parents to meet with their child’s Counselors to discuss the child’s progress.

Testimonials

We were very happy with how Camp Excel was run and the feedback that we received daily. Our son loved going to camp daily and got prepared for camp in the morning like we had never seen before!

The only thing that would make Camp Excel better is if it never ended.

Gracie loved Camp Excel, and asked to go back “every year”. We were thrilled too—she had a wonderful summer, due in large part to Camp Excel. Thank you!

I would like to thank you. You have no idea what a gift you have given my son. Camp Excel is an answered prayer.

Our first year at camp and we all loved it! Scheduling, activities, counselors were amazing. Loved the feedback given on the social skills assessment. Also liked the parent meetings. So nice to have the opportunity to meet with other parents in the same situations. We’ll most definitely be back next year. Thanks for all your help and guidance.

Great program, wonderful counselors!!

This has been a tremendously important experience for our son and for us and may well have made it possible for him to have a successful transition back into school after being out of school for 3 ½ months in the spring. We are tremendously grateful. The parent group was exceptional; Kathy is an amazing facilitator .

My daughter had a great summer! I’ve noticed a big difference in how she interacts with other kids at the playground.

Camp Excel is the single best thing I have ever done for my child.
