The Camp Excel program is designed to meet your child’s academic, social
and emotional needs in a camp-like setting.

Children work on academics and behavior management with a Certified Special
Education Teacher. Each child's academic program is developed to meet
individualized goals based on information provided by the child's last teacher.

These daily groups assist children in improving interpersonal skills and are facilitated by Master's Level Therapists. Therapeutic activities are fun and based on themes such as Conversational Skills, Problem Solving, Cooperation, Self-Esteem Building and Anger Management. In addition to these groups, staff members continuously give encouragement and guidance in using these social skills throughout the day.

The children work with Certified Physical Education Teachers, and are given coaching and supervised practice in sports and game skills. Small groups and a 1:3 staff to child ratio, allow for individual attention and optimal success. The goal of sports skills training at Camp Excel is to teach cooperation, enhance self-esteem and self-efficacy. Good effort is encouraged and competition is not emphasized.

Arts and crafts give children an opportunity to express their creativity. Art projects often have a therapeutic component such as projects that build self-esteem, express feelings or encourage cooperation.

Cooking, Music, Nature Study, Talent Show, Carnival, Teen Leadership are other special activities offered at Camp Excel.

Monday through Thursday, children go swimming at a facility with Certified Life
Guards on duty. Staff to child ratio is 1:3 for swimming to provide for maximum supervision. Safety is the highest priority at Camp Excel. Our summer program
is certified by the New Jersey Department of Health and follows all safety practices required for that certification.

Weekly field trips can include a water park, laser tag, bowling, picnics and more. Children are very well supervised during these trips, and are assigned to counselors with a 1:3 staff to child ratio.

Camp Excel utilizes an extensive behavioral point system to encourage and reinforce progress toward goals. Children earn points that they can spend on fun prizes in the Camp Store!

Friday is Award Day at Camp Excel. Awards are given to several campers from
each group during a special assembly. The award, as well as the recognition from staff and other campers in a full round of applause, does absolute wonders for
boosting self-esteem!

OT and Speech services offered at an additional fee.

At Camp Excel, family involvement is an essential part of our program. Daily Reports, weekly Social Skills Progress Reports, End of Program Academic Summaries and End of Program Social Skills Progress Reports are sent home to inform families of the child’s progress. A Parent Group is offered one evening each week. We provide free childcare during that time for campers and their siblings in an effort to make attending more convenient. The sessions are not mandatory, but strongly recommended. Camp Excel Director, Kathleen Cable facilitates the Parent Group. Ms. Cable has extensive experience in working with parents and their children and offers topics such as:

• Behavior Modification
• Giving Effective Commands
• Communication
• Social Skills
• Building Self-Esteem

• Dealing with Siblings
• Using Time-Out
• Limit Setting and Appropriate Consequences
• Medication Issues
• How to Deal with Bullying
These groups offer helpful information and also provide a supportive environment
for families. Many parents take this opportunity to network with other parents and continue to keep in touch throughout the year. We also provide an evening for parents to meet with their child’s Counselors to discuss the child’s progress. Siblings Group are offered to assist siblings of campers in expressing feelings related to their role as a brother or sister of a child with special needs.
